In a groundbreaking development in male infertility treatment, PGIMER Chandigarh has successfully carried out India’s first robot-assisted vasovasostomy — a procedure to reverse a vasectomy — using state-of-the-art robotic technology.

The surgery was performed on July 9, 2025, by a team of experts from the Department of Urology, including Dr Aditya Prakash Sharma, Dr Girdhar Bora (both Additional Professors), and Prof Ravi Mohan.

This innovative approach replaces the conventional microscope-based method with robotic precision, marking a significant advancement in reproductive microsurgery in India.

A 43-year-old man, who had been facing secondary infertility after undergoing a vasectomy, became the first in India to receive a robot-assisted vasovasostomy at PGIMER, Chandigarh. The procedure was performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, and the patient was discharged the very next day, indicating a quick and smooth recovery.

Traditionally, this surgery relies on powerful microscopes. However, PGIMER's team set a new benchmark by opting for robotic assistance instead. The robotic system offered a 3D magnified view, greater precision, and improved control while stitching, making the procedure more efficient and accurate than ever before.

This groundbreaking procedure places India among a handful of countries capable of offering robot-assisted vasovasostomy. PGIMER aims to publish the findings in leading medical journals to inspire broader clinical use of the technique across India and globally.

The doctors credited their success to the leadership of Prof Uttam Mete, Head of Urology, and Prof Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, whose continued support and guidance played a crucial role in achieving this milestone.

According to Prof Lal, this success not only reinforces PGIMER’s status as a premier medical institution but also marks a significant step forward in advancing male infertility treatment in India.
